Afghan Hound Dogs

afghan hound dogs The Afghan hound is one of the oldest breeds of sporting dogs. There is evidence that they were bred in ancient Egypt around 6,000 years ago and were then imported into Afghanistan. An old Afghanistan legend says that the Afghan hound was one of the animals Noah took into the Ark.

They were introduced to Britain in 1907 and the U.S.A. in 1926. The popularity of this breed of dog has greatly increased in Britain and the U.S.A. since the Second World War.

In Afghanistan they are greatly prized for their intelligence and agility as hunters. The Afghan hound hunts by sight. They should have long, pendulous and well-feathered ears, a long fine head with barely any 'stop', and a prominent occiput. The powerful, arched neck should be level with a slight 'impression' over the loins and the hip bones very pronounced. The coat should be thick, fine, and silky, with a well-defined saddle of short hair. Feet should be long and well-feathered, and the tail set low and carried high. Powerful hind quarters with well-let-down hocks and good turn of stifle. promote speed. It can reach a speed of 56 kph/35 mph.

Afghan hounds are of various colors including golden, black, black and tan, and cream. The height of the adult male is about 27-29 inches. and the height of the female about 25-26 inches.

Athough an Afghan hound is something of an individualist, it learns quickly and is eager to please. Even though it was bred as a hunter it is a gentle and loving dog so is suitable if you have children.

The Afghan hound is an extremely beautiful dog and makes a good pet. However, it must be realised that it is a large dog that needs lots of exercise, has a large appetite and the coat needs regular grooming.
