An Alsatian is a breed of dog of noble character and refined appearance. It is German in origin, having been produced by the combination of some of Germany's best sheep dogs. In Europe and the USA it is usually called the 'German shepherd dog'. Its popularity outside Germany and France dates from the end of the First World War.
The Alsatian is essentially a working dog, eager to learn, instinctively obedient. These qualities have made the Alsatian invaluable as a shepherd dog, a police dog, a guard dog, and as a guide dog for the blind. |
Although there is a strong resemblance to the wolf, the Alsatian has never been crossed with the wolf. Its characteristic angulation is due to a long straight back which slopes gradually to a low-set tail. Movement should be free and effortless with a smooth easy gait. The length of the body should be slightly more than the height at the shoulder. Head should be long and straight, with a broad skull tapering to the nose. Ears are carried erect. Eyes are almond-shaped and dark. The front legs must be straight with plenty of bone. For dogs the heoight is 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder: bitches 22 to 24 inches.
