With his hard, dense coat, game and hardy character, and shaggy appearance, he is properly built and equipped for his specific work of hunting out the fox, otter, and other animals of the Cairngorms. The cairn's general appearance is that of a strong and fearless terrier of medium size, compactly built. His head is small, but in proportion with his body, his chief characteristic being his foxy appearance. But he should bear no resemblance to the Scottish terrier. The skull should be' broad, with strong jaw, eyes set wide apart, medium in size, rather sunk with shaggy eyebrows. Ears should be small, pointed, carried erect, but not set too close together. The tail should be carried gaily. The cairn terrier should have a double coat with profuse hard outer coat. Colors are red, sandy, grey, and brindle; dark points are most desirable and typical of the breed. The cairn terrier is one of the most popular of the terrier breeds. The cairn terrier, an old Scottish breed of dog, has now become very popular as a pet.
