The Dalmatian breed of dog is named after Dalmatia since it was originally believed that it came from there. The Dalmatian and the horse seem natural companions and this dog was used in the days of horse-drawn carriages to run with the vehicle and protect its occupants from danger on lonely country roads. In early days in England the Dalmatian was regarded as part of the stable, where he lived and slept. The Dalmatian is of smart appearance, is courageous, a perfect companion, and very obedient. |
Markings are quite distinctive. Color is pure white with clear round black or liver spots evenly distributed throughout the whole dog. Dalmatian puppies are born without spots, the spots only appear when the puppies are about nine weeks old. The color of the spots should not intermingle, i.e., a dog should have all black spots or all liver spots. They are usually about an inch in diameter. The body should be proportionate, deep, and strong. The head is fairly long, with skull flat and broad between the ears, which are of moderate size and carried close to the head. Forelegs should be straight and strong, hindquarters muscular. He should be capable of speed and much endurance. Males are normally 23 to 24 inches high and weigh around 55lb. and females are normally 22 to 23 inches high and weigh around 50lb.
A Dalmatian makes a good family pet, but it needs lots of exercise.
