Irish Wolfhound Dogs

The Irish wolfhound is said to be one of the oldest breeds of dog. As with many other breeds, its origin is uncertain, but when this Irish hound was revived in the 19th century it is said to have been reproduced by Great Dane and Scottish deerhound cross-breeding. As the name suggests, the dog was used originally to hunt wolves in Ireland, but when the wolf became extinct the future of the wolfhound was entirely due to the conscientious efforts of keen fanciers supported by the Irish Wolfhound Club in England, and the finest specimens of the breed are still to be found in England.

Because the Irish wolfhound is the tallest breed in the world, its general popularity is not equal to that of some smaller dogs, but its gentle nature, noble character, and graceful beauty always claim the admiration of dog lovers. Great height and proportionate length of body, without sacrificing quality and soundness, are the main attributes of the Irish wolfhound.

The height of male dogs should average from 32 to 34 inches, and the weight should be around 120 Ib; bitches should be about 28 inches and weigh around 90 lb. In shape, the Irish wolfhound resembles a huge greyhound, very muscular, strong, built on graceful lines, and very active and free in movement. The head should be long, skull not too broad, ears small and carried like a greyhound's ears. The neck is long, strong, and well arched, the chest deep and broad, forelegs strong and straight with massive bone. The coat is rough and hard and weather-resisting, colours being grey, brindle, red, and fawn. The outstanding characteristics of the Irish wolfhound are great height and proportionate length of body; it is the tallest breed of dog in the world, averaging 32 to 34 inches high.
